The Challenge
Paddington Station isn’t exactly a quiet corner of London. It’s a fast-moving, always-on transport hub which makes it an exciting (and demanding) place to build anything.
Our brief?
Create an engaging installation to support the launch of a new hybrid Wi-Fi system on GWR’s Intercity Express Train – a collaboration between Motion Applied, GWR, Hitachi Rail, Network Rail, Peninsula Transport and others.
The tech being showcased combines satellite connectivity and ground networks, which is something truly new for UK rail. The installation needed to reflect that innovation while fitting safely into a platform that never stops moving.
And this is where railway environments require specialist experience. Live stations bring:
- Incredibly tight access windows
- Controlled work zones
- Strict safety permits
- Constantly shifting passenger flow
- Multi-layered stakeholder sign off
- Build schedules that can change at a moment’s notice
It was a proper logistical puzzle. The exact kind of challenge we enjoy!

Our Approach
When you’re working in a live station, planning is everything. So we built the entire project around clarity: clear visuals, clear communication and clear processes.
Here’s what we delivered:
Design & Visualisation
- Full CAD plans
- 3D walkthrough renders so the client could “see” the activation long before install
- Brand support, including logo development and visual identity refinement
Build & Creative
- A custom-built structural frame designed for quick, safe installation
- Large-format print artwork, designed and produced in-house
- Video content creation, with scheduling and on-site playback control
Logistics & Coordination
This is where specialist experience really matters.
- Close coordination with Network Rail to align build slots with operational windows
- A staged, low-disruption installation plan
- Clear communication across all partners
Delivery Timeline
Although the activation had been planned in our calendar for some time, the physical build and prep were turned around in four nights, including contingency time. Everything was designed, tested, checked and ready for installation before arriving on sire.
Team Size
For installation, we deployed a core team of three, supported by local crew due to the restricted build windows.
During the activation itself, two JHAV technicians remained on site to monitor the LED screen and respond instantly if needed.
For derig we returned with three crew, again supported by brilliant local crew to meet the tight out-of-hours removal slot. We were out in under 4 hours, a testament to our teamwork.
Every element was engineered to slide into place without slowing down commuters or the station’s operations.

The VIP Launch
To kick things off, a VIP event brought the Department of Transport, MPs, partners, press, and stakeholders together at Paddington. The contrast of a sleek Formula 1 car beside the GWR Intercity Express Train told the story perfectly: motorsport-grade innovation meeting public transport.
Our installation framed the event. Dynamic screens, bold branding and a polished finish that helped the message land with impact. It created a focal point for guests to explore the new connectivity technology and understand the benefits behind the collaboration.
The Result
Despite the complexity, everything went in smoothly, safely and exactly as planned.
- The installation stood out visually without disrupting a single commuter.
- The client had total clarity at every stage thanks to our design previews.
- The messaging landed clearly during the VIP launch and throughout the activation.
The success of this project came down to teamwork, prep and knowing how to work inside a space that never stops moving. These are the moments where our experience really pays off. When the pressure is high and the environment is tricky, but the outcome still needs to look effortless.
